Double a’s, n’s and z’s. The unusual spelling of my name was my father’s idea (thanks, Dad!). I grew up in Kentucky and like many of my generation, moved away from the small farming town as soon as I could. I moved to other states and ended up in Italy for four years. Then another two in Egypt before I found myself returning to that small town 26 years ago and loving it. I still love to travel and go whenever I can.
I was always into things growing up; sewing, clay, pottery, building stuff– you get the idea. About 23 years ago, I picked up a brush and have been painting ever since. I have been at the Pendleton since 2008, when I began subletting wall space to show my work. Shortly before I retired from teaching in 2013, I began working toward becoming a full-time artist. Three studios later, you can find me on the sixth floor, directly ahead just as you exit the elevator, in Studio 606.
Artists are often asked what one word describes their artwork. For me, it is “PASSION.” It is that constant drive to express the way life makes me feel through my art. I want to pass on to the observer of my work that fantastic feeling of “living life” that I so often experience.
My tool? COLOR. My son used to tell me when I first started to paint that I “needed to use more color!” I couldn’t agree with him more. Please visit me on Final Fridays or contact me for an appointment.
