About the Artist

Biography

Terri Kern received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from Ohio University in 1991. In 1995, she left a teaching position at Morehead State University to open her own ceramics studio. Since that time, Terri has exhibited nationally and internationally in France, Germany, Japan, China and Cuba. Her work has been featured in Cincinnati Magazine, Clay Times, Ceramics Monthly, Ceramic Arts Daily and The Journal of The American Art Pottery Association.

She has received four Individual Artist Grants, been nominated twice for a United States Artist Fellowship and has been recognized with numerous awards for excellence in the field of ceramics. Her work is included in Museum, Corporate, International and Private Collections and was shown on The Great Pottery Throw Down. She created a solo exhibition of her work for display at the Taft Museum of Art from October 2025 through February 2025. She also teaches online and in 2022, created her own teaching website, TerriKernClasses.com.

Terri’s work documents her personal history and touches on subjects both serious and humorous. Whether she’s creating sculptural pieces about the experience of helping her mom as she grows older, painting vessels with images of rabbits in outer space or creating jewelry with painted landscapes, her goal is to create beautifully crafted ceramic pieces. Her work is full of detail, color and imagery from the natural world like birds, fish, foxes and trees. You can see her work on her website, terrikern.com or follow her on Instagram or Facebook at Terri Kern Studios, where she posts images of her work in progress and answers questions about her process.

I have a new group of classes open for registration.

What's Happening This Month In Studio 511

I'm excited to share my love of clay with you this coming Final Friday (July 29). In March of 2023, Cincinnati is hosting NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts). In honor of that, we will be creating a city-wide art installation made out of clay. If you'd like to make a piece to be included in the installation, please visit me in studio 511.
