The Pendleton Art Center expanded into its 2nd location in Rising Sun Indiana in 2001. The Rising Sun Pendleton is located in the original Gibson Hardware Store located at 201-207 Main Street.
The Geo. B Gibson Hardware store occupied the site at the corner of Main and Poplar Street prior to the fire in July 1885 which destroyed that building and a large portion of the block. In August of that year, Gibson purchased the property, and erected the current brick building. In 1890 the “mammoth sign” on the Poplar Street side was commissioned. In 2009 the fading sign was restored to its original glory by local artist, Andrea Grimsley.

Various members of the Gibson family operated Gibson’s Hardware and later Gibson’s Gamble Store (furniture) at that location until 1957 when the business was sold to Raymond A. Carman of Greensburg, IN who operated the business as The Gamble Store
In 1971 the building was sold to John Pavey, doing business as Pavey’s Small Engine Sales and Service.

The rearmost part of the building with a Poplar Street address was almost always a Tin Shop.

207 Main Street portion of the building consistently had a Masonic Hall or IOOF Hall on the 3rd floor, Offices, later Photography on 2nd floor, Groceries, later Dry Goods & Cigars on1st floor.

The Pendleton Art Center house 2 stories of artist studios as well as a 1st floor gallery, adjacent retail space and apartments. The center has hosted many art shows in the main gallery including Postcards of Rising Sun as well as the Quilt Fest.
